So here’s the thing, I had a pretty sheltered childhood. Anything I ever wanted to do my parents always had the same response, “You can do it when you are 18.”
They started off with little things, like when in high school I went through my metal stage and I wanted to paint my room black, ‘you can do it when your 18.’
Then they got a bit bigger, I want a piercing, I want a tattoo, and it was all the same response, ’eighteen, eighteen, eighteen.’
Then came the big one, ‘I want to travel the world’. And I was actually completely serious about it. There was actually a bit of a pause before the standard response,
‘Wait until you’re eighteen.’
So, now I am. Eighteen, and though I didn’t paint my room black or get that bellybutton piercing I so desperately wanted (although the tattoo happened), I have left and started on my whistle stop tour of humanity while doing a degree on sociology. And who knows what will happen!
